Oh, those eyes! Whether yours are a bright baby blue or a deep chocolate brown (or green, or gray . . . ) they say so much about you without speaking a word. As you age, though, loose skin and puffy under-eyes can say the wrong things. You look tired, cranky, older. In the past, the only way to rejuvenate your eyes was blepharoplasty — surgical removal of the excess skin. Now, we can offer our patients a non-invasive alternative that produces impressive results – Plasma Fibroblast Therapy.

You might say Plasma Fibroblast Therapy is a real eye-opener. The in-office treatment targets fibroblasts — collagen and protein-producing cells in the dermis, the layer of skin just below your outermost skin layer. Fibroblasts play an important role in helping skin wounds heal as well as maintaining skin firmness and tightness. The treatment is so effective, Dr. Elizabeth Hernandez says it is now her first choice for smoothing and tightening skin in the eye area. The treatment is suitable for all skin types and genders.

What Is the Treatment Like?

Dr. Hernandez uses a pen-like device called Plasma IQ that discharges the energy of plasma to small areas of the skin. The plasma tip doesn’t directly touch the skin, but instead releases a targeted current just above the skin. The hot current creates small dots, or controlled micro-injuries, in the skin’s layer. While the description might sound scary, patients say they experience little to no discomfort. It takes about 30 minutes to treat both eyes. Upper and lower eye areas can be treated.

Patients can expect some post-treatment swelling for a few days, along with tiny scabs which will fall away within a week. There is no formal downtime required.

Should You Consider Plasma Fibroblast Therapy?

That depends on the degree of skin laxity and your expectations, says Dr. Hernandez. Most people looking for eye area rejuvenation need and want to reduce excess skin and puffiness in both the upper and lower eyelids along with minimizing the appearance of crow’s feet.

Men and women with mild to moderate excess skin on their upper and/or lower eyelids are excellent candidates for Plasma Fibroblast Therapy to firm the skin in these areas. Most can achieve a great degree of improvement in the skin laxity with just one treatment, although for some patients Dr. Hernandez may recommend two treatment sessions, 6 weeks apart.

If you have severe excess skin on your upper or lower eyelids and desire 100% correction, Dr. Hernandez says it will take an upper and/or lower blepharoplasty to achieve those results. However, if you have severe excess skin and do not wish to undergo this surgery, Plasma Fibroblast Therapy can still be an option as long as you are willing to accept noticeable but not maximum improvement.

On the other hand, if your eyelids are not showing signs of aging but you are concerned about crow’s feet and the condition of the skin under your eyebrows, Dr. Hernandez suggests treatment using Morpheus8 RF microneedling with Plasma, microneedling with Plasma, or microneedling alone. All three of these options are good choices for skin in those specific areas, but they cannot be used to treat the upper eyelids or skin that is very close to the lash line on the lower eyelids.
