Women as young as their 20s or into their 50s and post-menopause years can start to see and feel changes in their external genitalia that make them uncomfortable. Genetics, pregnancy and childbirth, significant weight loss and the natural aging process can all cause the labia minora (internal vaginal lips) and/or labia majora (exterior vaginal lips) to stretch and sag, become wrinkled or distended, or appear asymmetrical.

Maybe it’s mostly the changes in appearance that bother you. But for most women, it’s the physical issues brought on by these changes that cause the most concern:

  • Discomfort or pain during intercourse, activities such as cycling or horseback riding, or even sitting
  • Discomfort or visible protrusion when wearing a swimsuit, underwear or tight clothing such as yoga pants
  • Difficulty maintaining personal hygiene

These Signs Indicate You May Need Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty can correct the functional and cosmetic problems noted above, restoring a more youthful appearance and your self-confidence, too. At Eterna Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Elizabeth Hernandez offers three types of labiaplasty, so there is an option just right for you.

Surgical labiaplasty can eliminate as much as 60-70% of excess skin from the labia minora so they look more youthful and aesthetically pleasing and they no longer protrude beyond the labia majora where they can cause discomfort and other unwanted vaginal challenges. Surgery is particularly beneficial for women who have a greater amount of loose skin or particularly large labia minora.

Labia majora augmentation, or majoraplasty, aims to enhance the appearance of the labia majora, the external vaginal lips. During this in-office surgical procedure, Dr. Hernandez reduces and tightens the labia majora to produce a more compact appearance by removing a thin crescent-shaped section of skin from the inside of each lip.

Aviva Femtite scarless labiaplasty is a non-surgical alternative in which Dr. Hernandez uses minimally-invasive radiofrequency technology to remove excess fat and tighten skin. On its own, this procedure can reduce excess skin by as much as 40-50% — not quite the level of surgical labiaplasty, but impressive. For some patients, Dr. Hernandez may recommend a combination procedure, using surgical labiaplasty to correct the labia minora and non-surgical labiaplasty to correct labia majora.

Sometimes the Signs Point to More than Labiaplasty

Pregnancy and childbirth, menopause and medical procedures or treatments that cause estrogen loss can bring a range of symptoms beyond external changes to the labia minora and/or labia majora. These commonly include:

  • Vaginal laxity (stretched vaginal tissues)
  • Vaginal atrophy (dryness, itching, burning, excess discharge)
  • Pain or loss of sensation during intercourse
  • Urinary stress incontinence
  • Increased or chronic urinary tract infections

diVa laser vaginal therapy is a non-surgical, non-hormonal, non-painful treatment that successfully addresses all these symptoms, helping women feel rejuvenated and able to fully enjoy their most intimate moments once again. diVa uses a hybrid fractional laser to treat both surface and deeper skin tissue simultaneously. The treatment can help correct mild to moderate vaginal laxity and is the only treatment that improves vaginal lubrication.

Labiaplasty Can Change Your Life

Unwanted vaginal changes are no longer an inevitable fact of a woman’s life. As a skilled surgeon and as a woman, Dr. Hernandez understands how these changes can affect your daily life as well as your outlook. Whatever your specific concerns, she can recommend the right treatment plan to alleviate problems and restore your comfort, appearance and self-image.
