Yes, all men have breasts, although in most cases the breasts don’t enlarge with maturity so the chest remains flat. In some men, however, breasts do develop to some extent or enlarge with weight gain so they protrude, giving a more feminine shape. Regular exercise and eating a healthy diet cannot necessarily change this condition, called gynecomastia. But a male breast reduction procedure can, and it may not necessarily require surgery.
If you’re a guy who is 21 or older and tired of feeling less than “manly” because of the look of your chest, we can help. At Eterna Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Elizabeth Hernandez is a pioneer in the San Antonio area when it comes to bringing the latest treatment options and techniques to her patients. She successfully treats gynecomastia using surgical and/or nonsurgical techniques, tailoring the procedure to achieve each patient’s personal aesthetic goals.
Male breast reduction surgery (mastectomy)
Traditional surgery alone can often produce flatter, more masculine contouring for men who have excessive glandular tissue but not much excess fat, and whose chest skin is firm. This is an outpatient procedure performed under general or local anesthesia, in which an incision is made in order to remove excess tissue (and excess skin, if necessary).
For patients with firm skin and a greater amount of excess fat, Dr. Hernandez combines surgery with liposuction. For patients who have both loose skin and excessive fat, she may also incorporate BodyTite and/or Morpheus8 procedures to enhance surgical results.
Surgery requires several days of downtime for recovery. Results will be immediately visible as post-procedure swelling resolves and will continue to improve over the next few months. Incision scars are well hidden along the lower edge of the areolas and will fade over time.
Non-surgical male breast reduction
For the vast majority of gynecomastia patients, Dr. Hernandez is able to achieve impressive results using a customized blend of nonsurgical techniques – BodyTite and Morpheus8. These procedures can be particularly valuable because symptoms of gynecomastia may include loose skin as well as excess fat and tissue.
BodyTite is a radiofrequency-based lipolysis technology that works in two ways. The procedure gently melts and reduces excess fat deposits, and it simultaneously tightens skin to smooth and firm the surface skin. Morpheus8 is a dual technology that combines radiofrequency energy with microneedling, to further enhance results. Traditional liposuction vacuums away unwanted fat deposits.
Sometimes liposuction alone can be the best option for men who have excess fat, good skin elasticity and who do not have excess breast glandular tissue development. Typical examples are men who gain weight that is very noticeable on their chest, or men who lose weight but still retain excess fat on their chest.
Benefits of Male Breast Reduction
Achieving a flatter, tighter chest with natural looking masculine contouring can do wonders to boost self-image and confidence. You can look smoother and leaner under clothing, and you’ll never hesitate again to take your shirt off on a hot summer day.The best candidates for nonsurgical male breast reduction are adult men who are in good health and who are at a stable weight.
Eterna’s nonsurgical treatment option is an in-office procedure that can produce truly impressive results in 2 hours, with minimal downtime. It is also much more affordable than surgery.
What happens during the male breast reduction procedure?
Dr. Hernandez brings outstanding technical expertise to each procedure, which enables her to individually tailor results according to each patient’s goals.
After applying local anesthetic to the treatment area, she uses BodyTite technology and then Morpheus8 to reduce or remove excess fat, breast tissue and loose skin to produce smoother, tauter chest contouring. As noted above, she may also use liposuction as part of this process, to remove larger amounts of excess fat.
An extra boost is available to patients who choose to add PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatment to their Morpheus8 procedure. PRP is derived from a small sample of each patient’s own blood.
What happens after the procedure?
Dr. Hernandez usually recommends a 2-day recovery period – the day of your procedure and the next day. You will need to take it easy during this time. You will likely also have to wear a compression wrap for 4-6 weeks, to reduce risk of swelling and provide support as your chest heals.
This procedure has no effect on chest hair.
Boost your benefits
BodyTite and Morpheus8 are both highly versatile treatment techniques. If you have concerns about excess fat or contouring in other parts of your body, Dr. Hernandez may be able to address those at the same time as she performs your breast reduction.
