Two New Treatments That Will Have You Saying Goodbye to Your Double Chin

Conveniently located to serve San Antonio, Eagle Pass and the surrounding area.

June 30, 2022

A frustrating problem that many of our San Antonio patients can relate to, it goes without saying that a double chin is never flattering. Until recently, submental fullness has been difficult to effectively target and treat, and often required a more invasive, surgical procedure. This all changes with Eterna Cosmetic Surgery’s two new additions to our fat blasting arsenal, CoolSculpting CoolMini™ and Kybella™.

The two treatments are similar in that they both eliminate fat cells from the submental area. CoolMini uses the same controlled cooling as its counterpart, CoolSculpting®, to freeze and eliminate fat cells. Kybella is a synthetic formulation of deoxycholic acid, a substance naturally produced by our bodies to break down and absorb fat cells.

The Big Question: CoolMini or Kybella?

One treatment is not superior to the other, and each has its own unique benefits. Ultimately, the decision depends on the type of fat present, the nature of the area, and your personal preference. With a set applicator, CoolMini offers a broad reduction of the submental area. Kybella allows for a more customized treatment and can be tailored to your individual needs—as such, it is often the preferred choice for facial contouring.

Other considerations include:

  • For patients uncomfortable with needles, CoolMini may be a better treatment.

  • Patients with smaller sized heads should be forewarned that they may not be a candidate for CoolMini as their face simply might not fit the applicator.

  • Others opt for Kybella because it has a shorter treatment time (usually around 15 to 20 minutes to CoolMini’s one hour).

  • Recovery can also be a deciding factor—although both treatments are minimally invasive and have little to no downtime, Dr. Hernandez has found that her patients experience slightly more swelling with Kybella.
