Microdermabrasion in San Antonio
At Eterna Cosmetic Surgery, we offer multiple skin resurfacing options to match each patient’s unique complexion and improvement goals. These procedures work in different ways and are best suited for different types of skin conditions. Microdermabrasion is a popular choice because it is easy on the skin, yet produces impressive rejuvenation results.
What is Microdermabrasion?
Dermabrasion is literally the process of abrading (scrubbing or scraping) the skin, commonly used to treat deep acne scars. It can be pretty harsh, so it is painful and requires downtime for recovery. Microdermabrasion, on the other hand, is a gentler version of this treatment that exfoliates the skin to reveal a smoother, fresher surface with a more even tone and texture.
At Eterna, we use the most advanced microdermabrasion technique – a diamond-tipped wand that lightly “sands” the epidermis to remove skin cells and surface irregularities. The diamond tip is more precise and safer than the traditional technique (which uses crystals), allowing us to exfoliate deeper and also treat the tender, delicate skin around the mouth and eyes.
This treatment is not recommended for patients who are taking isotretinoin for acne or have taken this medication within the past six months because this can increase the risk of scarring. To ensure patient safety, we recommend waiting at least six months after taking this medicine.
Benefits of Microdermabrasion
This procedure is safe and effective for all skin types. It is especially valuable for improving the appearance of acne scars, stretch marks, fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, and discoloration. However, it can also reduce or eliminate enlarged pores and clear blackheads, leaving the entire skin surface looking softer, healthier and refreshed.
Microdermabrasion is virtually painless and requires no downtime. Patients often say the vibration of the diamond tip wand feels like a facial massage.
What happens during a microdermabrasion treatment?
For this procedure, we move the diamond tip wand over the target area. As the device exfoliates, it also gently suctions away the dead skin cells and other debris. Along with resurfacing the skin, the microdermabrasion process also helps to thicken collagen that supports skin cells, so the surface appears firmer, as well as smoother.
The procedure usually takes about an hour.
What happens after a microdermabrasion treatment?
Because this procedure is so gentle, there is no recovery period required. Patients can go right back to their normal routine.
Just one microdermabrasion treatment can produce visible improvement. However, because the procedure is so gentle, the results are subtle. To achieve optimal resurfacing and tightening, we recommend 3 to 6 treatments, depending on each patient’s specific skin condition. Treatment appointments can be scheduled weekly. We find that many patients like to schedule regular future treatments as well, to maintain their smoother, more polished appearance.
