We all know that everyone should use sunscreen (and not just in summer) to protect our skin from sun damage and premature aging. But here in San Antonio our summers are especially warm — and dry, too. To keep your skin looking its best this season, our team at Eterna Cosmetic Surgery recommend the following tips:
1. Sunscreen!
Not all products are created equal, so it’s vital to choose a sunscreen that actually works. Be sure it will block both UVA and UVB rays, because both can cause damage to your skin. The Daily Sheer Broad Spectrum SPF 50 is a great option for all skin types. For women who wear makeup through the day, Dr. Elizabeth Hernandez recommends the Sunscreen + Powder Broad Spectrum SPF 40 because it protects your skin from the sun’s harmful rays which later cause premature aging.
2. Moisturizer!
This is another essential. Moisturizers should be used twice daily all year round, morning and night after toners and serums. The Renewal Crème and Daily Power Defense from ZO Skin Health are both great options to restore hydration and promote healthy skin repair. They also calm and soothe skin to minimize visible redness. Right now, we recommend the Daily Power Defense because it is more suitable for summer or warmer months. Then, for colder months, we recommend switching to the Renewal Crème.
3. Wash Your Pillowcase
Many people don’t realize that their pillowcase can contribute to skin irritation. We recommend washing your pillowcases at least once a week to reduce acne breakouts and using a silk pillowcase to reduce friction on the skin, which will help prevent premature fine lines & wrinkles.
4. Keep It Up
Consistency is key in your skin care routine, and that includes the steps you take to protect damage during the hot, dry summer.
5. Give Your Skin a Rejuvenating Boost
Now is a good time to treat your skin to a professional treatment that will help ensure you look your very best. Dr. Hernandez says microneedling is a great skin rejuvenation treatment which helps to reduce the appearance of fine-lines and wrinkles while improving texture and tone. This treatment can also treat dark marks, acne scars, melasma, and sun damage. You’ll see visible improvement right away, and you can watch your skin continue to improve as your body responds to the treatment by producing increased collagen, elastin and blood flow.
6. And What about Men?
Skin health is an “all genders” concern. However, men’s skin is thicker, more resilient, and produces more oils. For guys, Dr. Hernandez recommends using the exfoliating cleanser and oil control acne treatment pads from ZO Skin Health twice daily — morning and night — followed by the Dual Action Scrub twice a week to prevent painful ingrown facial hair.
