Why Choose a Doctor for Botox?

Millions of women and men around the world get Botox injections to rejuvenate their facial appearance and to maintain a youthful look as time goes by. Botox treatments are highly effective and so convenient you can be in and out in minutes. What could be simpler, right?

Wrong. There is more to Botox injections than many people realize, and – as with so many things in life – the details can make all the difference. You want great results, but you also want to stay safe. So, the most crucial detail when it comes to Botox is choosing a doctor to perform your injections.

You Do Have a Choice

Every state has different laws that govern who can administer Botox and filler injections. All of them allow licensed physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners to do this. Here in Texas, anyone with the proper training can give you a Botox shot, if they are working under a doctor’s supervision. But do you want just anyone injecting a potentially dangerous substance into your face? You shouldn’t.

Here’s why choosing a medical doctor makes the most sense.

Sound medical advice

Botox isn’t automatically a suitable treatment for every person, even though it may seem as if everyone you know is getting Botox. It is essential to get a facial examination and discuss your medical history and other pertinent factors to know if Botox is right for you.

In fact, the law requires an exam to be performed by a medical doctor before anyone can give you Botox injections. That information helps determine the safest treatment plan for you, before, during and after injections. It just makes sense to have the person who is most knowledgeable perform your injections, too.

It’s your face

While we can use Botox to treat issues other than dynamic facial lines and wrinkles (excessive underarm sweating, for example), the vast majority of patients come to us seeking to minimize the appearance of existing wrinkles and/or prevent new ones from forming. Given the fact that your face is the most prominent aspect of your body – the part that everyone can see – this is no place to take risks.

Precision is critical

Botox is injected into muscle, to calm the movements that cause visible wrinkles. It takes extensive knowledge of facial anatomy and physiology to precisely place the Botox and to know exactly how much to inject.

In the hands of someone who is not fully educated and skilled, Botox injections can pose serious risks – not just undue bruising or pain or other temporary side-effects but damage to nearby nerves or complications elsewhere in the body if the Botox is inadvertently injected into a blood vessel. A tiny fraction of an inch or too much serum could be disastrous instead of producing the youthful benefits you desire.

Though unusual, Botox injections can also cause immediate adverse effects such as an unexpected allergic reaction. If your injector is not a doctor and their “supervising” physician is not actually onsite, you may not get the immediate treatment you need.
